How to See the Goodness of God in Every Season
Life moves in seasons: seasons of joy, seasons of grief, seasons of waiting, and seasons of breakthrough. But no matter the season, the goodness of God does not change. It remains steady, like an anchor for our souls. Still, in hard times, it can be difficult to recognize that goodness. So how can we open our eyes to see it in every season?
1. Understand That God’s Goodness Is Not Circumstantial
The goodness of God is rooted in His character, not in our comfort. Psalm 100:5 says, "For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations." Even when your situation feels unfair or painful, God is still good. He is working, even when we can’t see it yet.
2. Practice Daily Gratitude
Gratitude tunes your heart to notice God’s hand in the ordinary. Keep a journal and jot down three things each day that reflect His goodness: a kind word from a friend, a sunrise, a warm meal, a moment of peace. As your list grows, your awareness of God’s goodness will, too.
3. Reflect on His Faithfulness
Look back at the ways God has shown up in your past. Maybe it was a time He provided when you were in need or gave you peace in chaos. Reflecting on His track record builds your trust that He’ll be good again—because He doesn’t change.
4. Stay Rooted in Scripture
God’s Word is full of stories and promises that reveal His character. Psalm 27:13 says, "I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living." Read His Word with fresh eyes. Ask Him to reveal His heart and His goodness to you personally.
5. Lean on Community
Sometimes, we need others to point out what we can't see for ourselves. A trusted friend or mentor can remind you of God’s truth and help you spot the goodness of God when you're struggling to find it.
6. Surrender the Outcome
It’s often in the tension of unanswered prayers or unexpected detours that we begin to doubt God’s goodness. But surrendering control and choosing to trust is one of the most powerful declarations of faith we can make. Romans 8:28 promises that "in all things God works for the good of those who love him."
Final Thoughts: Seeing the goodness of God in every season takes practice and intentionality. It means fixing your eyes not on what is seen, but on the One who is unseen. Through joy or sorrow, clarity or confusion, God’s goodness is there. Sometimes it comes in a whisper, sometimes in a miracle, and sometimes in the quiet strength to keep going.
No matter the season you’re in today, ask Him to help you see His goodness. It is all around you—and it never runs out.
